Deputy Harbormaster
Santa Cruz Port District is seeking qualified candidates for the regular, full-time position of Deputy Harbormaster. Under general supervision, Deputy Harbormasters perform law enforcement, safety, security, parking, traffic, marina management and other functions of the District; assures effective enforcement of state and federal regulations, and District policies and procedures. This is not a sworn peace officer position.

- Performs marine search and rescue services in cooperation with US Coast Guard, State Parks Lifeguards and other outside agencies.
- Performs routine foot, vessel, and vehicle patrols to ensure the safe and orderly operation of the harbor.
- Enforces Port District ordinances, parking regulations, and boating laws, including California Harbors and Navigation Code.
- Provides boater assistance in the form of emergency vessel towing and pump out.
- Responds to medical, boating, water-related, and other emergencies.
- Supports the relationship between the District and the general public by demonstrating courteous behavior.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND one year of experience in marine equipment operations; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
License & Certification Requirements
A valid California State Driver’s License is required. Completion of first aid, CPR, and Basic Boating training required within 12 months of date of appointment. Employment is subject to successful completion of psychological evaluation, background check, and comprehensive medical examination, including drug testing.
Compensation and Benefits
The starting salary range for this position is $5,810 to $7,786 per month, depending on qualifications.
The Port District offers full benefits which include:
- Retirement: The District participates in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). Employees’ tiered placement is dependent on status as a “classic” member or “new” member.

- Paid Leaves: 10 days of vacation accrual; 12 days of sick accrual; and 13 holidays per calendar year.
