NOTICE UNDERWATER HAZARDS!
Swimmers and surfers beware of an underwater, unsecured, dredge pipe hazard in the nearshore area between 5th and 6th Avenue. This pipe is approximately 40 feet in length and 10 inches in diameter, visible at the water's surface at some tides. Swimmers and surfers are advised to stay well to the east of 6th Avenue in order to avoid contact with this pipe.
Additionally, the Santa Cruz Harbor is advising mariners to beware of a hazard located at N36°57.635 W122°00.049, on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Harbor federal navigation channel. This hazard is a steel, diamond shaped buoy attached to a 2,000 lb. anchor marking a dredge disposal pipeline. Recent storms have altered the length of the chain and the buoy is sometimes not visible during high tides. It is located on the eastern edge of the navigable channel approximately 50 yards S/E of the top if the east jetty. Mariners are advised to avoid the area of this hazard when transiting the harbor entrance.
The Port District is in the process of removing both hazards, however, this may take several days.

ENTRANCE CHANNEL DREDGING
Crews continue to work to deepen the federal entrance channel and address shoaling that exists outside the mouth. The Toyo submersible pump has been deployed to assist with dredging on the east side of the jetty. The pump's utility is currently limited by the reach of the harbor's crane, but staff is researching options for improving its functionality and the feasibility of deploying the pump in other areas of the inner harbor.
North harbor dredging of coarse-grained material (greater than 80%), is permitted through April 30, 2019. Crews will continue to work in the X/J channel until the season's end.

CHANNEL NAVIGATION
In preparation for a busy boating season, Port District staff would like to remind boaters of the following rules governing vessel traffic within the harbor channel.
- The speed limit within the harbor is 5 MPH.
- Sailboats may tack across the channel, even if such tacking places the vessel in violation of the "keep-to-the-right" rule.
- When tacking across the harbor channel onto the side of the channel that places the sailboat in violation of the "keep-to-the-right" rule, sailboats shall yield to oncoming vessels so as not to cause an oncoming vessel to alter speed or course.
- All vessels crossing the main harbor channel, or leaving a fairway, shall yield to any vessel transiting the main channel.
- Paddlers must keep to the right at all times, and no more than two abreast. A paddler may choose to cross over to the opposing side of the channel to exit or enter the harbor entrance.
- Human-powered watercraft is not allowed in the launch ramp area at any time.
- Please observe the signs! Swimming and prone paddling in the harbor is prohibited.
- While on the water, please observe these "rules of the road" and have a safe and enjoyable boating season.
