ANNOUNCEMENTS
GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY:
ALDO'S SEAWALL REPLACEMENT PROJECT

On June 12, 2019, the Port District ceremonially "broke sand" to mark the beginning of construction of the Aldo's Seawall Replacement Project. The ceremony marked the culmination of a three-year long collaborative effort between the Port District and Aldo's Restaurant, and was also a celebration of Granite’s involvement in renewal of this important infrastructure. Granite Construction was the original contractor for the Santa Cruz south harbor basin which was completed in April 1964, and originally constructed this seawall, the jetties and berthing areas.

The seawall replacement, which was designed by Mesiti-Miller Engineering, is estimated to cost $2.4 million. The construction window for the seawall is June 15, 2019, to November 30, 2019. Work to demolish the existing restaurant building is anticipated to start in the coming weeks, and will be followed by seawall replacement which will involve driving coated sheet pile seawalls in front of the existing structure. Construction updates will be posted on the Port District website, as they become available.

While seawall construction is underway, the Port District Commission, harbor staff and Aldo’s proprietor Mauro Olivieri will continue to collaborate on a new lease, design, and permitting for future reconstruction of the restaurant building.

DREDGING UPDATE: OFF-SEASON MAINTENANCE IS UNDERWAY

Dredge operations ended for the season on June 7, 2019, following two extensions authorized by regulators. Demobilization, planning, and preparation for off-season maintenance tasks are currently underway. Mariners are advised that some areas outlying Santa Cruz Harbor, and shoulder areas along the east and west jetties of the marked federal entrance channel, may be shallow. Mariners transiting the entrance channel are advised to continue to use caution and be aware of shallow conditions, especially during low tides and large surf. All boaters are advised to check the most recent entrance sounding prior to transit. Boaters with deeper draft vessels are advised to be especially vigilant, particularly at lower tides and when operating along the east/west margins of the channel.

NEW KAYAK RACK STORAGE
48 spaces of kayak rack storage on J-Dock are coming soon! Port District maintenance staff recently completed construction of a new kayak storage facility at J-Dock. Staff will begin assigning spaces soon.

The Fourth of July holiday is expected to draw large crowds to the harbor and nearby beaches, impacting parking and traffic within the area. Road closures are not planned, so vehicle access to the harbor will not be restricted.

SAVE OUR SHORES:
POLLUTION PREVENTION IS PATRIOTIC

 Join Save Our Shores on July 4th to help create cleaner, safer, more beautiful beaches by distributing trash and recycling bags to the public and encouraging them to take their trash home after their fun day on the beach. On the morning of July 5th, join Save Our Shores for the Star Spangled Beach Cleanup to help stop thousands of pounds of trash and debris from polluting the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. DREDGE PIPE HAZARD
A floating dredge pipe hazard has been located in the swim zone off of Twin Lakes State Beach and marked with a buoy. Port District crews are working to remove this hazard. Until removal is complete, swimmers are advised to stay away from the marked floating pipeline.

The Santa Cruz Harbor is now on the Pumpout Nav app! The Port District met with Environmental Planners, Liz Juvera and Natasha Dunn, from the San Francisco Estuary Partnership to review the Clean Vessel Act Grant Program and discuss how the Santa Cruz Harbor can participate in keeping our waters clean by educating boaters on properly disposing boat sewage and finding the closest pumpout station.
