2019-20 DREDGE OPERATIONS

North Harbor Dredging:
North harbor dredging commenced on October 1, 2019. Facilities staff and the dredge crew are teaming up, utilizing the Port District’s 8” dredge Squirt, to dredge the inner harbor. Squirt is currently positioned in the northern portion of the X/J channel, near the culverts. Dredging will continue in this quadrant for approximately three weeks. Upon completion, the crew will mobilize to other areas approved for inner-harbor dredging during the 2019-20 season, including the southern portion of the X/J channel, north harbor turning basin, and the west J channel. Squirt has been outfitted with a new cutter head to boost production.

Mariners transiting in the area are advised to read all gate notices and beware of submerged pipe and equipment hazards that may be present. Click here to view the areas proposed for dredging and the anticipated pipeline configuration in the north harbor.

Federal Entrance Channel:
Entrance channel dredging is anticipated to start on Monday, November 4, 2019. Crews will move Twin Lakes from her off-season mooring in the north harbor to the entrance channel on October 14, 2019. The typical dredge schedule is Monday – Thursday, with maintenance performed on Fridays. To kick off the season, the dredge crew will work an extended schedule of 10 hour days Monday - Friday through November 15, 2019.

During dredging operations, pass  Twin Lakes  on the east side (Crow’s Nest side) of the channel unless otherwise marked. Stay at least 50′ from the dredge. Contact the dredge crew for passing instructions on VHF channel 8.
The Port District's workboat, Dauntless, was splashed on September 12, 2019, after off-season maintenance was performed.
Fire Safety and Detection Systems
The Port District would like to remind all slip renters to ensure their vessel is equipped with functional smoke detectors, CO 2 detectors and currently serviced fire extinguishers. Installing smoke detectors in vessel cabins and enclosed engine spaces provides an invaluable first line of defense. It's simple, cost effective and potentially life saving. We urge all boaters to install a smoke detector on their vessel.

Staff is working with a vendor to offer a free fire safety training for slip licensees on the use of fire extinguishers in mid-November. Stay tuned for notices of class offerings.

The Conception tragedy sadly brought the importance of these issues to the forefront. Santa Cruz Port District Commissioners and staff would like to express their deepest sympathy to all who were affected by the Conception tragedy.
ATTENTION:
Catamaran Storage Renters
Please remove your catamaran from beach storage starting Wednesday, October 16, 2019, and by no later than Sunday, October 27, 2019.

Launch ramp storage is available from October - March 2020, at the same rate.
WE'RE HIRING:
Dredge Monitor
Santa Cruz Harbor is seeking a part-time, temporary employee to assist with dredging monitoring for the upcoming 2019-20 dredging season.

Visit the District's website to learn more about employment opportunities at the harbor.

H&H Fresh Fish
$1 OFF PER LB
Starting November 1st, H&H Fresh Fish will be reducing how much plastic they hand out at the Harbor Fish House and farmers markets in an effort to reduce their footprint and encourage the community to bring their own bags or reusable containers.

From September 1st through November 1st, if you bring your own container, H&H will give you $1 off per lb of fresh fish. Help our environment by participating and switching to plastic-free!
Project Corner
Seawall Replacement Project
Granite Construction completed sheet pile installation earlier this week.

The large ABI rig will be removed from the project site soon and the crew will begin preparations for tieback installation. The project is estimated to be complete by November 30, 2019.
Pile Repair & Replacement Project
Phase 2 of the Port District's Pile Repair and Replacement Project is underway.

Bellingham Marine has assembled two barges to assist with the project, and will be mobilizing to the north harbor within the coming days. Once work in the north harbor is complete, Bellingham will return to the south harbor (early-November) to finish the remaining pile replacement work.

For slip renters berthed within project work areas, staff will make every attempt to provide as much notice of temporary relocation assignments as possible. Due to the nature of work, project timelines are difficult to predict. Bellingham has contracted with TowBoat US to perform project related vessel relocations. If you are interested in relocating your own vessel, please contact the harbor office.

Parking on the west side of the harbor will be impacted for the duration of the project, as the area is being utilized for piling delivery and storage. Pilings will be loaded onto a staging barge located in the fairway between E and F Docks. Vessels berthed in this area may, at times, experience temporary delays accessing the main channel. Vessels transiting the channel and fairways near project work zones should use extreme caution.
If you have any questions regarding these projects, please contact the harbor office at (831) 475-6161.
