NOTICE UNDERWATER HAZARDS
Swimmers and surfers beware of an underwater, unsecured, dredge pipe hazard in the nearshore area between 5th and 6th Avenue. This pipe is approximately 40 feet in length and 10 inches in diameter, visible at the water's surface at some tides. Monterey Bay Salmon & Trout Project (MBSTP): May 21, 2019
On the afternoon of May 21, 2019, MBSTP will operate a chinook salmon release from Santa Cruz Harbor. Chinook salmon smolts are obtained from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW)-operated Mokelumne Hatchery and will be transported to the Santa Cruz Harbor for immediate release into the ocean environment. This is done as part of a CDFW effort to mitigate losses of chinook salmon sustained during outmigration from river systems throughout central California. This program directly and measurably supports commercial and sport fisheries of the Monterey Bay area.

Charles Walton was the largest single donor to the construction of the Walton Lighthouse, named in honor of his brother, Derek, who served in the merchant marines.
Did you know
Santa Cruz Harbor’s new electronic key system descended from one of Mr. Walton’s inventions? Mr. Walton was the first patent holder for the radio frequency identification device (RFID). This technology is the keyless system used today on numerous doors, parking lots, and now at the Santa Cruz Harbor!
Credit to slip renter Neils Kisling for sharing that bit of harbor history!
