Safe Boating Tips for the

Fourth of July

Nearly 14% of all boating-related accidents occur during the three summer holiday weekends of Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.

Check out the safety tips below to help ensure a safe and fun holiday:

▬ Acquaint your passengers with the location of safety information and equipment on board, including life jackets.

▬ Waterways may become crowded and distractions numerous. Designate a person aboard the vessel to help you act as a lookout.

▬ Ensure a properly fitted life jacket is worn by each passenger. Remember that life jackets meant for adults DO NOT work for children. On recreational vessels underway, children under 13 years old must wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket unless they are below decks or in an enclosed cabin.

Fourth of July

The Fourth of July holiday is expected to draw large crowds to the harbor and nearby beaches, impacting parking and traffic within the area.

It is unknown at this time if road closures around the harbor will be in effect. Please monitor the Port District's website, as updated information will be provided.

The Port District would like to remind all visitors that fireworks of all types and alcohol are banned on all Santa Cruz County beaches.

Water Conservation

To help reduce water use around the harbor, please:

Minimize the use of fresh water at all times

Scrub boats with a brush and sea water first

Use shut-off spray nozzles on all hoses

Use fish scaling tools, not water, to remove scales from fish

Report all leaks to the harbor office

Thank you for helping us conserve water!

National Safe Boating Week

IMG_4961.jpg

National Safe Boating Week was a success! The Port District promoted safe boating practices and worked with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Division of Boating & Waterways to offer free vessel safety inspections and administer a life jacket exchange program at the harbor!

Special thanks to Coast Guard Auxiliary, TowBoatU.S., and Division of Boating & Waterways for partnering with the Santa Cruz Port District and making this event a success.

Stay safe this boating season!

Patrol Boat Dedication Ceremony

Port District staff would like to thank all of those who joined in celebrating the arrival of the District's new patrol vessel at its recent dedication ceremony, which was held on May 20, 2022.

The new patrol boat was dedicated and named in honor of recently retired Senior Deputy Harbormaster Don Kinnamon, who played an integral role in identifying and securing the necessary one-time budget allocation from the State of California for the acquisition. Senior DHM Kinnamon retired from the Port District last October after 31 years of service. We are happy that his legacy will continue on with “Patrol Boat Kinnamon” for years to come.

Channel Navigation

1_AerialBrighton.jpg

In preparation for a busy boating season, Port District staff would like to remind boaters of the rules governing vessel traffic within the harbor channel. The Inner-Harbor Vessel Traffic brochure, which provides a comprehensive listing of the Rules Governing Inner-Harbor Vessel Traffic, is summarized below:

► The speed limit within the harbor is 5 MPH.

► Sailboats may tack across the channel, even if such tacking places the vessel in violation of the "keep-to-the-right" rule.

► When tacking across the harbor channel onto the side of the channel that places the sailboat in violation of the "keep-to-the-right" rule, sailboats shall yield to oncoming vessels so as not to cause an oncoming vessel to alter speed or course.

► All vessels crossing the main harbor channel, or leaving a fairway, shall yield to any vessel transiting the main channel.

► Paddlers must keep to the right at all times, and no more than two abreast. A paddler may choose to cross over to the opposing side of the channel to exit or enter the harbor entrance.

► Human-powered watercraft are not allowed in the launch ramp area at any time, or operate in fairways and other prohibited areas (see maps).

► Paddlers are advised to stay well clear of aerators, which can present a danger whether or not they are in operation.

► Please observe the signs! Swimming and prone paddling in the harbor is prohibited.

► While on the water, please observe these "rules of the road" and have a safe and enjoyable boating season.
