Harbor Patrol
Vessel Replacement
The Port District’s 28’ Almar patrol vessel was acquired in 1998. It was funded, in part, by grant proceeds received from the California Department of Boating and Waterways. The patrol vessel is now over 20 years old and has surpassed its recommended service life.
Over the last two years, the Port District has sought funding sources to replace the patrol vessel, including the California Division of Boating and Waterways’ (DBAW) grant programs. Unfortunately, due to limited funding available in DBAW’s program, the Port District did not receive grant funding.
In June 2019, the Port District was successful in securing a one-time budget allocation in the amount of $530,000 from the State of California to replace its aged patrol vessel. Less a 2% administrative fee, the State will reimburse the Port District up to $519,400 for purchase of a new vessel in the form of a grant. Additional Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) funding in the amount of $18,277 was allocated in the District’s FY19 budget, bringing total available funding for a new patrol vessel to $537,677.
The success of securing the one-time budget allocation from the State was due in large part to the efforts of Senior Deputy Harbormaster (DHM) Don Kinnamon. At its regular public meeting on July 23, 2019, the Port Commission adopted a resolution honoring Senior DHM Kinnamon for his extraordinary effort and assistance in securing the necessary funding for a new marine search and rescue patrol vessel.
Staff is currently in the process of outlining the procurement process for a new patrol boat and looks forward to continuing its mission of safely serving the needs of the community and boating public on the Central Coast for decades to come.

The Port Commission's Policy and Operations Committee will schedule a workshop in mid to late September to review the U.S. Coast Guard regulations that apply to the harbor's water taxi operation, and discuss challenges, opportunities and options in moving forward. Stay tuned to the harbor's website for information about the date and time.

Dredging Operations
North harbor dredging is anticipated to begin October 1, 2019. Crews will deploy
Twin Lakes and begin dredging the federal entrance channel in early-November 2019. Once resumed, entrance dredging operations will continue through April 2020.
The typical dredge schedule is Monday - Thursday, with maintenance being performed on Fridays. For additional information about dredging operations, please

Waterside Office Space Available
275A Lake Avenue, a 195 square foot office on Santa Cruz Harbor's east side is available for rent.
Interested applicants must complete a rental application and submit it, along with any additional documentation that may be relative to the selection process, on or before September 17, 2019.

The
Climate Action Program of Santa Cruz
, in collaboration with community partners, is spearheading an anti-idling campaign as part of its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is to mitigate our area’s contribution to global warming. This effort initially focused on vehicle idling at area schools, through an educational sign campaign. Community advocates recently reached out to the Port District to educate boaters on the importance of limiting unnecessary idling by vessels, vehicles, trucks and buses.
In keeping with current practice, harbor staff will continue to do its part by limiting unnecessary idling in vehicles and vessels, and will continue to remind truck and bus drivers to do the same. The Port District is proud of the significant investments made over the past few years in equipment featuring newer generation engines that reduce diesel emissions, including engines on the dredge

new engines on the inner-harbor dredge
Squirt
and the workboat
Dauntless,
and a new Caterpillar dozer outfitted with the latest low emission engine technology.
We of course recognize the importance of running vessel engines on a regular basis to ensure proper maintenance and operation, and safely queue when the launch area and fairways are crowded. This educational outreach program by the Climate Action Program is intended to remind the boating public to limit unnecessary idling whenever possible. Small efforts made today could make a big difference tomorrow.

Seawall Replacement Project
|
What is happening on site?
Work to replace the seawall continues. Granite Construction crews are in the process of constructing a temporary trestle system, which will act as shoring and provide structural support for the heavy equipment needed to drive the sheet piles.
Sheet piles are scheduled for delivery in early-September.
The project will be completed by November 30, 2019.

Pile Repair & Replacement Project
|
Phase 2 of the Port District's Pile Repair and Replacement Project, which will replace approximately 80 worn and damaged piles throughout the harbor is scheduled to commence mid-September.
Staff will be contacting slip renters who are berthed within the project area for temporary relocation assignments. If you have any questions regarding this upcoming project, please contact the harbor office at (831) 475-6161.

The Port District will be hosting a haunted harbor trick-or-treat event for kids on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 4 PM to 7 PM. More details to come.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Boating Safety Courses
|
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering boating safety courses on Coastal Navigation, Boating Skills, and Sailing Skills to start in September. Registration for these classes will take place on Thursday, September 5, 2019, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, at the Santa Cruz Harbor Public Meeting Room.
