Steve Reed Appointed to Port Commission

Stephen Reed

Long-time Santa Cruz resident and active boater Steve Reed has been appointed to the Santa Cruz Port Commission. Reed was sworn in at the Commission’s special meeting on April 3rd to fill the vacancy created by Jeff Martin’s resignation.

“I’m excited to become a part of the renewal of the Santa Cruz Harbor,” Reed said. “There has been a lot of positive

change at the District, and I’m looking forward to joining this successful team in the work of rebuilding the harbor and building sustainability for the future.”

Reed has served as Vice President for External Relations with CSU Monterey Bay, Director of Public Relations and Governmental Affairs at UCSC, and Lead Advance for President Jimmy Carter. He is currently managing Bruce McPherson’s campaign for the County Board of Supervisors, and is involved with California Forward, the non-partisan state government reform “think tank.”

According to Chair Dennis Smith, Reed’s background and qualifications will add a unique perspective to the Commission’s deliberations. “Steve has a lot of experience working with local, state and federal government, and really understands the challenges faced by special districts,” said Smith. “We are fortunate to have someone with Steve’s leadership skills and passion about the harbor join the Port Commission.”

Former Commissioner Jeff Martin endorsed Reed for the position. Martin resigned after moving to a new home outside of Port District boundaries.
